Mahabharat — Retold, As Never Before
5 / 5
Today, while the world praises French perfumery, the real origin lies buried under centuries of colonial erasure and cultural theft.
Think perfume came from France? Think again.
Long before the cobbled streets of Paris knew the scent of luxury, a small Indian town called Kannauj was already distilling the divine. Using ancient techniques like deg-bhapka, India perfected the art of making attar — pure, alcohol-free, natural perfumes — over 2000 years ago, possibly even during the Indus Valley Civilization.
This film uncovers the forgotten truth of how the world's first perfume was born in India, nurtured by Hindu perfumers— only to be appropriated by Arab traders, documented by Persian scholars, and eventually industrialized by Europe, especially France.
Today, while the world praises French perfumery, the real origin lies buried under centuries of colonial erasure and cultural theft.
